News & Events – B.O.S. User Symposium 2008

The 6th B.O.S. user Symposium was held from April 21st to April 22nd in the historical city of Aachen. Meeting place was the Hotel Aquis Grana in the midst of the historical old town. The User Symposium was jointly conducted by B.O.S. and the User Community. Users of the tcACCESS product as well as customers using tcVISION attended the conference. The highlights of the 2 days have been the presentations from users and the announcements made by B.O.S. for tcACCESS Version 8 and tcVISION Version 3.

 

One of the most significant new features in both products is the implementation of DBCS (Double Byte and Multi Byte Character Support). More than 330 additional code pages have been implemented into tcACCESS and tcVISION. These implementations have already led to successes. The first tcACCESS and tcVISION customer in Taiwan joined the user community at the end of 2007. The first installation- and implementation steps have been performed by the customer and B.O.S. using the Internet and Remote Desktop Capabilities. A very successful "Year of the Pig" for B.O.S.

 

Andreas Horder from ekom21 presented the "e-Government" applications, that have been developed by ekom21 using tcACCESS. The range of these applications goes from web applications used by the police to applications for general inquiries of the residents registry databases. All of these applications are web based and they use a central Web Service called the "XMLDataHub". This Web Service uses tcACCESS to communicate with the mainframe ADABAS databases. Arthur Fröhlich from Watson Wyatt Heissmann GmbH, Wiesbaden, talked about a DotNet-application that acts as a general Host Data Portal for the Mathematicians of the company that use a variety of different access types and processing options that are normally not available on the mainframe. The connecting piece between the applications and the VSAM files on the mainframe is tcACCESS. The application is based upon the tcACCESS API and has been developed using the OCX development component of tcACCESS. (User story available at: Retirement, Reward, Responsibility). 

  

 

 

Wolfgang Schrul of EADS, Defense & Security, gave an impressing presentation about their use of tcACCESS and tcVISION. tcACCESS is being used at EADS for more than 10 years now. tcVISION is responsible for the real-time synchronization between 15 DL/I databases and a data ware house using MS SQL Server. The daily synchronization sums up to approx. 50000 online changes and roughly 5.7 million batch changes. In addition every day 2 VSAM files are synchronized with the MS SQL Server. EADS uses the tcVISION BULK component to perform this task (User story available at:  Building on Partnerships).

 

 

 

The tcVISION and tcACCESS implementation of the Diocese of Mainz was presented. The Diocese of Mainz is a longtime tcACCESS customer and the application is e-mip (Electronic Residents registry at the Rectory). This is a web application that is used by over 3000 parishes in 14 dioceses. The access to the ADABAS database on the mainframe by the web application is the responsibility of tcACCESS. Starting early 2007 the application is being migrated from the mainframe to a Windows environment with MS SQL Server. tcVISION is used for the real-time synchronization between ADABAS and MS SQL Server. The product tandem of tcACCESS and tcVISION takes care of a smooth bi-directional synchronization between the two platforms. The Dioceses of Mainz has developed additional tools that make the synchronization environment even more transparent (User stories available at:

The attendees of the Symposium were impressed by the functions of the new versions of tcACCESS and tcVISION.

A sightseeing tour of the Cathedral of Aachen and a comfy dinner at an old restaurant together with a musical supporting program completed the successful Symposium.
